The idea that everything would crash on the Epsom racetrack looked like a tempting choice for the final episode of Peaky Blinders, so it made a splash in the ending of the second series.
Just like last week, the ending opened with a stylish opening from the starting gate (completely pun), and Tommy wrote a regret in case he sent it to the New York Times in the event of his death. It can effectively show the fragmented state of the Shelby clan, and it can also show Tommy's concerns about attacking Epsom. This is a measurement opening to the plot where all cylinders fired.
Tommy's orchestrated tricks paid off for Shelbys, seemed to overcome Sabini's bet, and through Alfie Solomons with Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomons) surpassed him. Hardy's scene in the finale is an incredibly tactful battle with Tommy of Cillian Murphy. His performance is hardly a microgram or nuance, but Hardy is an important addition to the cast. Considering that there are too many characters to play around with and draw lines, this story feels streamlined and easy to understand, which is the hallmark of Steven Knight's top writer. No time is wasted in advancing the plot, building personality or emotions.
Choosing Epsom as the main setting of the plot proved to be budget-conscious. The grand finale is a feast of noise and visual feast, making this series of glasses very suitable to continue to produce such a style impact on the screen. It does showcase the collection's iconic marvelous set designs, outfits and directions.
The final confrontation between Major Campbell and Tommy was an unforgettable scene. A crowded bar was cleared when Geranium announced the game that day, and only Tommy and Campbell stood alone at the bar. This scene represents all the content of the show: great performances, great photography and lens selection, and wonderful dialogue. As usual, little people need to make bubbles with each other under intense communication. It does an interesting analysis of the relationship between them and reveals the emotional scars left by Grace in the first series.
A strong theme in this episode is the grief suffered by women associated with Tommy Shelby. Whether it was the heartbreak of May Carleton and Grace, or the objectification of Polly or Lizzy, these women were treated fairly low. Although they are both strong characters, in a series of stories, you may be dominated by male actors, and their role is quite obvious. It's great to see episodes like Peaky Blinders giving these female characters such a central place in the crazy ending.
Given Tommy and Campbell's hatred for each other, Polly was surprised to be the one who shot Campbell. Whether he died or not, his ambiguity was like the end of the first season. For Campbell, however, forcing her woman Polly in such a disturbing manner to become the one to serve him would be the right ending. Polly's line "Don't jerk with Peaky Blinders" must be one of the most satisfying character moments on television this year.
Despite the heavy action of the finale, these characters are always given proper breathing space and satisfaction. Tommy's relationship with Campbell, Alfie Solomons and May, and Polly's confrontation with Major Campbell, are important moments in the TV highlights. For the writer, the most important thing is that Tommy faces a certain death scene. After fulfilling all his ambitions, he faced his execution with heroism and regret. The quietness of the scene is incompatible with the rest of the episode, and patiently relaxes, letting Tommy enjoy the fun he thinks of the last cigarette. He can be expected to survive, but he handles it well.
Everyone who participated in the second batch of Peaky Blinders is honored. It takes the audience once again into the fascinating journey of the Shelby world, while continuing the brave visual guidance taken by the debut series. In the next series, when there are several drawing lines for further exploration, you will have to wait a long time until the Blinders return.
